The Tree of Life is totally, totally, amazing.
And I liked it, too.
(Sometimes we are impressed, but remain unmoved.
Or amused by something that is only a clever trifle.)
But Terrence Malick’s newest movie can safely be called a masterpiece, a tour de force, whatever words or expressions one might use to signify “must-see,” “brilliant,” “mind-blowing,” etc.
It’s not at all surprising that it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
The film stars Brad Pitt as a strict and stern father in 1950s Texas, Jessica Chastain as his gentle and luminous wife, and Sean Penn as their grown-up son, Jack.
There are also amazing scenes of the creation of the universe, microscopic life, dinosaurs, you name it.
The Tree of Life opens here in Montreal on Friday, June 17.
Watch out for it.
I count myself very lucky to have attended the press screening today.
I’ll write more before the film opens.
