Denis Villeneuve's Sicario in competition at Cannes

Sicario, starring Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin, will screen in the competition section of the festival, which runs May 13 to 24.

There had already been speculation that Villeneuve’s thriller about an FBI plan to assassinate a Mexican drug lord would make the Cannes cut. Confirmation came as the full lineup of films, in and out of competition, was announced at 5 a.m. Sicario will premiere in cinemas Sept. 25.

Sicario, Spanish for hit man, is Villeneuve’s third English-language American film after Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and Prisoners, starring Gyllenhaal again alongside Hugh Jackman. Villeneuve’s French-language films include the Oscar-nominated Incendies, Polytechnique, Maelström and Un 32 août sur Terre.
